Propagation in crossed electric and magnetic fields: The quantum source approach

چکیده

The propagation of electrons in static and uniform electromagnetic fields is a standard topic of classical electrodynamics. The Hamilton function is given by a quadratic polynomial in the positions and momenta. The corresponding quantummechanical problem has been analyzed in great detail and the eigenfunctions and time evolution operators are well-known. Surprisingly, the energy-dependent counterpart of the time-evolution operator, the Green function, is not easily accessible. However in many situations one is interested in the evolution of a system that started with emitted particles that carry a specific energy. In the following we present a suitable approach to study this type of matter waves arising from a localized region in space. Two applications are discussed, the photodetachment current in external fields and the quantum Hall effect in a fermionic electron gas.

Introduction: Public and occupational exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) electric and magnetic fields induced by electrical equipment is a significant issue in the environment and at the workplace due to their potential health effects on public health. The purpose of this study was assessment of the electric and magnetic fields intensities and determination of mental and psychological ef...

Correlated Electron-Hole Transitions in Bulk GaAs and GaAs-(Ga,Al)As Quantum Wells: Effects of Applied Electric and In-Plane Magnetic Fields

The effects of crossed electric and magnetic fields on the electronic and exciton properties in semiconductor heterostructures have been investigated within the effective-mass and parabolic band approximations for both bulk GaAs and GaAs-Ga1−xAlxAs quantum wells. The combined effects on the heterostructure properties of the applied crossed electric/magnetic fields together with the direct coupl...

Semiclassical quantization of the hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields

The S-matrix theory formulation of closed-orbit theory recently proposed by Granger and Greene is extended to atoms in crossed electric and magnetic fields. We present a semiclassical quantization of the hydrogen atom in crossed fields, which succeeds in resolving individual lines in the spectrum, but is restricted to the strongest lines of each n manifold. By means of a detailed semiclassical ...

Laser–atom interaction can be an efficient mechanism for the production of coherent electrons. We analyze the dynamics of monoenergetic electrons in the presence of uniform, perpendicular magnetic and electric fields. The Green function technique is used to derive analytic results for the field– induced quantum mechanical drift motion of i) single electrons and ii) a dilute Fermi gas of electro...

Landau Quantization of Neutral Particles in an External Field

The quantum dynamics of an induced electric dipole in the presence of a configuration of crossed electric and magnetic fields is analyzed. This field configuration confines the dipole in a plane and produces a coupling similar to the coupling of a charged particle in the presence of external magnetic field. In this work we investigate the analog of Landau levels in induced electric dipoles in a...
